(Re)designing Māori Streets
(Re)designing Māori Streets explores how streets in urban Aotearoa can better reflect Māori values, identity, authority, and relationships to whenua and te taiao. Drawing on Māori-relevant literature, a national Māori Streets Survey, and Māori-led design wānanga, the project identifies priorities for safer, more walkable, culturally visible, ecologically connected, and people-centred streets. The work reframes streets as places of wellbeing, belonging, movement, care, and power, not simply transport corridors. It also outlines pathways for Māori leadership, partnership, and long-term change in the planning, design, and delivery of streetscapes.
