SERVICE:

DESIGN

We provide architectural and urban design services that connect buildings, streets, neighbourhoods, and communities through spatial justice, kaupapa Māori-informed practice, and place-based design.

SPATIAL JUSTICE AOTEAROA DESIGN

Architectural Design:

SJA brings an architectural design lens to projects that require close attention to the built environment, from individual buildings to neighbourhood-scale interventions. We are particularly skilled at integrating mātauranga Māori, community voice, and spatial justice principles into design processes and outcomes.

Our architectural design work is always situated within its broader spatial and social context — we are as interested in how a building relates to its surroundings, its community, and its cultural landscape as we are in what it looks like or how it functions. We bring design thinking to complex problems, helping clients and communities to imagine and realise environments that reflect their values and aspirations.

Urban Design:

We work across the full spectrum of urban planning and design, from strategic spatial thinking to detailed place-based design. Our approach centres spatial justice, asking whose needs are met by our cities, and whose are not, and draws on te ao Māori frameworks alongside contemporary planning and design practice.

We bring experience across a wide range of contexts, including housing, transport, public space, and neighbourhood development, and we are skilled at navigating the complex relationships between policy, community aspiration, and built outcomes. Whether working at the scale of a city strategy or a single street, we are committed to design and planning that is grounded in place, responsive to people, and oriented toward equity.
